The Oscar nominations: Sure things, snubs and surprises

When the Oscar nominees were announced Thursday morning, neither snubs nor surprises were particularly egregious. Aligning with expectations, “American Hustle” and “Gravity” led the pack with 10 nominations each, followed closely by “12 Years a Slave” 

The most Academy Award nominations went to three very different best picture possibilities: “Gravity” and “American Hustle,” with 10 in all, and “12 Years a Slave,” with nine.
