Juneteenth is the celebration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. Often cited as the African American Independence Day, the celebration of Juneteenth originates from Galveston, Texas, where on June 19, 1865, the word of the Emancipation Proclamation

Juneteenth is one of the most important days in African American history but we bet there's still a lot you don't know about this historic occasion.

A few thousand people filled Franklin Park in Dorchester for a picnic Saturday, celebrating both community pride and Juneteenth, which recognizes June 19 as the date when the last people legally held as slaves in the United States learned they were free.

The Dallas County Commissioners Court was voting on an item labeled in their agenda as the “Juneteenth Resolution,” referring to the annual commemoration of June 19, 1865, arrival of U.S. troops in Texas to free slaves
