Northern Lights Put On Show, Thanks To Large Solar Flare

These stunning photos capture the spectacular scenes in Scotland last night – where the Northern Lights illuminated the sky with colour. The deep purple and green bands of shimmering light were caught by award-winning photographer Maciej Winiarczyk 

"There's a photographer in Payson who took a picture of the northern lights, and he's a veteran northern lights photographer, and what he mentioned is that the red glow he saw is indicative of the aurora because it's at such a lower latitude," she said.

The sky danced with bands of green, yellow and other colors last night, as the aurora borealis, or northern lights, dazzled viewers in the upper Northern Hemisphere. The light show was sparked by a powerful solar flare that erupted from the sun Wednesday.
