Natural gas meant for residential use is supposed to cause a stink before it causes an explosion like the one that destroyed two buildings in East Harlem on Wednesday. The gas, which is naturally odorless, is infused with mercaptan, a chemical compound

The M.T.A. said Metro-North Railroad service into and out of Grand Central Terminal has been restored. Service was suspended earlier after two buildings collapsed from an explosion in East Harlem.
